Composition Competition 2013

To celebrate its 125th Anniversary, the Church of St. Mary Magdalene is  pleased to announce their sponsorship of an international competition for the composition of a choral mass setting. The prize is $5,000. (Can.) The new work will be premiered by the Gallery Choir on Saturday, November 29, 2013 in their concert of works composed for them through the years. The concert  will take place at the church.

RULES AND GUIDELINES:

The purpose of the competition is to provide a new mass for parish use based on the  following:

Title: The Mass of St. Mary Magdalene

Kyrie (9-fold):
(length not to exceed 2 minutes 30 seconds; a capella choir in 4 parts)

Kyrie eleison.
Christe eleison.
Kyrie eleison.

Gloria:
(length not to exceed 3 minutes 30 seconds; congregational unison line
throughout with organ accompaniment and some optional 4-part choral
harmony)

(Celebrant:) Glory to God in the highest
(All:) and peace to God’s people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, Almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,
Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us;
You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are
the Most High,
Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Sanctus & Benedictus: (length not to exceed 3 minutes; a capella
choir in 4 parts)

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts, Heaven and earth are full of thy
glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high.
Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.

Creed: (length not to exceed 4 minutes; congregational unison line
throughout with organ accompaniment and some optional 4-part choral
harmony)

(Celebrant:) I believe in God,                                                                                                (All:) the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Agnus Dei:(length not to exceed 2 minutes 30 seconds; a capella choir
in 4 parts)

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us.
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us.
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sin of the world, grant us thy peace.

The judging process is blind.  None of the scores submitted may include the composer’s name or any biographical information. Any means of identifying the composer, should it appear, will be blacked out.  A separate document containing the biographical and contact information for the composer should therefore be included in the submission.  Entry materials will be opened, numbered, and subsequently repackaged and sent to the jurors. Scores of the unsuccessful competitors will be returned. The competition reserves the right not to award a prize at its own discretion.
